Prev-what?
Say “preventive medicine” at a dinner party and you will get a polite nod. Say it at a hospital and you may get the same nod. It is one of the specialties recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, with its own board, its own residencies, and its own exam. And most medical students meet it, if at all, after they have already applied somewhere else.
What the show does
This is a show about a specialty, told by the people who practice it. We ask each guest three things: what the field is, in one sentence; where they have seen it work, with a job title attached; and who pulled them into it. Then we ask them to leave a question for the next guest, unheard.
Episodes are conversations, thirty to forty-five minutes, video first. Every other week for now. A companion newsletter, The Denominator, carries the one number each guest could not stop thinking about.
Who it is for
Medical students who have never had a rotation in it. Residents wondering if they chose right. Attendings who found it late and want to know who else is out there. And the people already in the field who have been explaining it at dinner parties for twenty years.

The host
Jules Bakhos, MD, MSc, MBE
Jules is a resident in preventive medicine at Loma Linda University. He trained in internal medicine in Beirut, practiced as an attending, spent three years in cardiac surgery research at Cleveland Clinic, and founded a nonprofit against smoking. He has spent years explaining medicine to a large online audience. He started this show because the field that finally fit him was the one nobody had told him about.
